Approach

Dr. Zelken's Philosophy

A facelift should never leave you looking "done" or unnatural. At the Zelken Institute for Aesthetic Medicine in Newport Beach, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jonathan Zelken specializes in advanced deep plane facelift techniques designed to restore youthful contours while preserving your individuality. The goal is subtle refinement — a refreshed, natural look that feels like you, only younger.

Today's techniques avoid the telltale signs of older-generation facelifts. A modern facelift is not about pulling; it's about carefully repositioning deeper tissues to create balance, harmony, and a look that feels entirely your own.

Dr. Zelken has made the facelift his signature operation, specializing in the composite deep plane technique. Performing facelifts every week for more than a decade, he has refined every step of the process to achieve outcomes that are both elegant and undetectable. His expertise has been featured by outlets such as CNN and NewBeauty, and patients regularly travel from across the country and around the world to place their trust in his hands.

The Procedure

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that lifts and repositions underlying facial tissues to reverse visible signs of aging. Unlike fillers or skin-tightening treatments, a facelift directly addresses laxity in the skin and deeper facial layers that cause jowls, sagging cheeks, and neck laxity.

The goal is to achieve a smoother jawline, firmer neck, and overall facial harmony that nonsurgical options simply cannot achieve.

There are many flavors of the facelift. Rather than focusing on trademarked names, Dr. Zelken keeps the concept focused on the result: a better jawline, tighter neck, and uplifted midface. The nuances of how to achieve that are so individualized, it's best to call it what it is — your facelift.

Is It Right For You

Who is a Good Facelift Candidate?

The best candidates are men and women in good overall health who are beginning to notice moderate to advanced signs of facial aging — jowls, sagging cheeks, or looseness in the neck. Ideal patients are non-smokers, have realistic expectations, and are looking for a long-lasting solution that goes beyond fillers or skin treatments.

There is no strict age cutoff. Dr. Zelken routinely performs facelifts on patients under 40 who are ready for a more definitive approach to facial rejuvenation. And if you've had threads, fillers, or resurfacing in the past, you may still be an excellent candidate for surgery.

What to Expect

The Facelift Procedure

Every facelift journey with Dr. Zelken begins with a consultation — in person or virtually for out-of-town patients — where he carefully evaluates your anatomy, reviews your goals, and recommends the best approach for natural, lasting results.

A preoperative appointment follows, usually within two weeks of surgery, to review bloodwork, photographs, and recovery guidelines, and to ensure you are medically optimized and aligned on expectations. The surgery itself is performed in a fully accredited facility under anesthesia with board-certified anesthesiologists.

Healing Timeline

Recovery

First Week

  • Swelling and bruising peak on days 3–4 (especially if fat grafting is performed).
  • Pain is usually minimal and well-controlled.
  • Optional hyperbaric oxygen therapy may help.

Two Weeks

  • Light social activities are usually possible.
  • Stitches behind the ears and hairline are removed between days 10–14.
  • Many patients return to work.

Four to Six Weeks

  • Swelling continues to subside.
  • Youthful contours of the face and neck become more apparent.
  • Confidence builds as results show more clearly.

Long-Term

  • Results can last 10+ years with a healthy lifestyle, sun protection, and good skincare.
  • Dr. Zelken and his team remain committed to ongoing safety, comfort, and satisfaction.

The Outcome

Results & Longevity

Unlike temporary treatments, a facelift offers enduring rejuvenation, often lasting a decade or more. The results go beyond surface changes: patients enjoy sculpted jawlines, smoother, more elegant necklines, and a natural restoration of youthful balance and volume.

The hallmark of Dr. Zelken's work is refined subtlety. The goal is not to look "different," but to look effortlessly refreshed — noticed without ever suspecting surgery. Subtlety here does not mean unremarkable; it means your transformation is seamless, graceful, and entirely your own.

Transparency

Risks & Considerations

As with all surgery, a facelift carries some risks such as swelling, bruising, numbness, or scarring. Dr. Zelken believes in complete transparency and will review all considerations during your consultation. Our team provides detailed pre- and post-operative instructions to minimize risks and support healing.

Common Questions

Facelift FAQ

No. Dr. Zelken's entire approach is built around the undetectable result — repositioning deeper tissues rather than tightening skin, so you look refreshed and like yourself, never "pulled" or "done."

Most patients feel comfortable with light social activities around two weeks, once stitches are removed and the most visible bruising has resolved.

Fillers add volume temporarily. A facelift surgically repositions the underlying tissues that cause jowls, sagging cheeks, and neck laxity — delivering results that fillers simply cannot achieve.

Because every facelift is individualized, pricing is determined after your consultation based on the techniques required to reach your goals. Our team will provide a clear, detailed quote.

There is no strict age cutoff. Dr. Zelken performs facelifts on patients under 40 as well as those who are older — candidacy is based on your anatomy and goals, not your age.

Incisions are placed discreetly within the hairline and the natural creases around the ears, where they heal to become well-concealed.

When healed, scars are designed to be inconspicuous and tucked into natural contours and hair-bearing areas, making them very difficult to detect.

Light activity resumes early, with a gradual return to full exercise typically around four to six weeks, per Dr. Zelken's guidance.

Some patients benefit from fat grafting to restore lost volume for a more youthful, balanced result. Whether it's right for you is determined during your consultation.

Dr. Zelken will review anesthesia options with you. Procedures are performed in a fully accredited facility with board-certified anesthesiologists to ensure your safety and comfort.

Yes. As a specialist in custom facial implants, Dr. Zelken can often combine procedures to enhance structural harmony — discussed and planned during your consultation.
